Jardinier Surface Flow Turf Irrigation Systems Conserve Water & Reduce Maintenance Costs

SurfaceFlowTM:

SurfaceFlow is ideally suited for turf irrigation where runoff is an issue. The theory behind SurfaceFlow was conceived and tested at Cal Poly Pomona by Dr. You-tsai Hung and the students of the Landscape Irrigation Science Department. Dr. Hung's theory took advantage of the 'wicking' action that is a common trait inherent in straw, sponges and other porous materials. Dr. Hung proved that a single point of watering would spread out across the connected porous material, i.e. grass. The result was better irrigation performance than traditional systems.

The Cal Poly Pomona testing laid the framework for Jardinier's SurfaceFlow turf irrigation system. Jardinier perfected and patented a commercially viable system that is being implemented into the irrigation designs around the State of California, including a significant portion of a wide median on Jamboree Blvd. in Tustin.

By using Jardinier's SurfaceFlow design program, this system can eliminate the environmental hazards of runoff and significantly reduce water usage. Jardinier's design program works by matching precipitation to the soil conditions and other factors. The turf grass acts as a temporary water storage system; this root system distributes water uniformly, and then slowly releases the water into the ground. When designed in accordance with the science behind SurfaceFlow, the system can achieve a higher distribution efficiency, and reduce water requirements by 25%-40%. Best of all, it virtually eliminates water runoff.

Turf Irrigation - Water Conservation & Reduction in Maintenance Costs
HOW SURFACE FLOW WORKS
  • Water travels along the grass stolons, by wick action, to distribute evenly across the surface of the soil for more efficient infiltration.
  • By the wicking nature of the grass, water is evenly distributed.
  • Water enters soil at an even rate.
  • Typical wetting pattern creates even water distribution throughout both soil surface and root depth.

DAMAGE FROM OVERSPRAY - SurfaceFlow is the solution

Surface Flow turf irrigation is the solution. Eliminate damage from overspray of water.
  • These pictures display damage that overspray has caused on concrete and asphalt. This problem occurs when the hardsurface gets wet from overspray, then freezes overnight. The frozen water expands and creates cracks and breaks in the concrete and asphalt, causing hundreds of dollars in damage and maintenance costs.

City of Tustin, Jamboree Road Demonstration Site
Runoff caused by traditional spray irrigation along this Jamboree Road median not only wasted water and destructive to the asphalt paving, it posed safety problems whenever traffic drove by.  SurfaceFlow technology was used to reduce water consumption by up to 30 percent, to curb runoff and to keep the median lush and green.
